Since 2021, Gebrüder Weiss has been dedicated to the future of mobility, working closely with startups, organizations, and universities to develop innovative solutions for the mobility sector. Our commitment in this field is rooted in our long history: as the world’s oldest transport and logistics company, we see it as our duty to take responsibility for driving sustainable and efficient transportation solutions that meet the evolving needs of society.
Our efforts go beyond providing logistics services. Through close communication, we offer projects and their participants a platform, promoting exchange, and paving the way for future developments.
The goal of these initiatives is to continuously test and develop new solutions for the future of mobility. This includes the use of alternative drives, the exploration of new mobility concepts, and the development of intelligent infrastructures to make transportation more efficient and environmentally friendly. Together with our partners, the Austrian Space Forum and the Swedish Space Corporation, we are also working on mobility concepts for space.
Our commitment began with the Mars Analog Mission of the Austrian Space Forum, which took place in Israel in 2021. As the official logistics partner, we safely transported sensitive equipment, spacesuits, and rovers to the Negev Desert and back. This project marked the beginning of a series of initiatives that are now a core part of our corporate strategy.
In 2022, we supported an exciting rocket launch in Kiruna, Sweden. As the official logistics partner of the Swedish Space Corporation, we transported scientific experiments from Stockholm to Sweden's northernmost city. These experiments were used in the "SubOrbital Express" mission, where twelve scientific experiments were tested in microgravity, providing important insights for research and the work of astronauts in space.
The student team Swissloop Tunneling, supported by Gebrüder Weiss, won the Innovation Award at the "Not-A-Boring-Competition" tunnel drilling contest in Texas in April 2023. The 40-member team from ETH Zurich outperformed competitors from around the world. Gebrüder Weiss organized the timely and safe transport of the high-tech drilling robot to the USA.
For the second time, Gebrüder Weiss supported the Mars Analog Mission of the Austrian Space Forum. We are also partners of the aCentauri Solar Racing Team from ETH Zurich. In October 2023, the students successfully completed a 3,000-kilometer journey through the Australian outback with their self-built solar car. To ensure that the high-tech vehicle arrived on time at the other end of the world, Gebrüder Weiss provided a customized logistics mix of land, sea, and air freight.
A significant milestone was the altitude world record set by the Gebrüder Weiss Peak Evolution Team, which conquered the summit of Ojos del Salado in Chile with a solar truck in 2023. This exciting expedition demonstrated the potential of sustainable transport solutions under extreme conditions. In the fall of 2025, we plan to set another world record with a hydrogen-powered airplane.
In February 2024, the dress rehearsal for the Mars Analog Mission AMADEE-24 of the Austrian Space Forum took place at Gebrüder Weiss in Vienna. Our site in Maria Lanzendorf served as a test ground for the astronauts and scientific experiments. Employees and their families had the opportunity to experience science and space exploration firsthand. We then safely transported the equipment for the actual mission to Armenia and back.
In June 2024, we supported a 600-kilometer expedition across Greenland, where an international research team collected valuable climate data. The scientists traversed the island from Kangerlussuaq to Isortoq, using modern measuring techniques to collect data on ice thickness and glacier melt. Gebrüder Weiss provided the necessary equipment and transportation to ensure the successful completion of the expedition.
In the future, we aim to expand our partnerships and support even more innovative ideas and projects that will transform mobility. We invite creative minds and pioneers to submit their concepts to us and shape the future of transportation together.
