Gebrüder Weiss receives award for sustainable building

Graz location gold-certified / Logistics center meets the highest requirements in terms of sparing use of resources and environmental protection / Certification of other locations planned

The German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) has awarded a gold certificate to the Gebrüder Weiss logistics center in Kalsdorf near Graz for its particularly resource-saving and eco-friendly building and operating concept. During the evaluation, ecological, economic and social aspects were taken into account, as were technical features. “This certification is the best proof that integral sustainability requirements have been implemented in the project with success,” says Johannes Kreißig, Managing Director of DGNB.

“The standards implemented in Graz allow us to set a group-wide quality benchmark for sustainable building at Gebrüder Weiss. An ideal working environment for our employees is just as important to us as is resource-saving construction and state-of-the-art energy management, which optimizes energy consumption and reduces operating costs,” explains Wolfram Senger-Weiss, CEO of Gebrüder Weiss. For many years, the company has taken sustainability aspects into account when planning its logistics centers. In future, the group plans to obtain certification for other facilities as well.

The high standard includes among others the efficient use of high-quality building materials and the use of wood from sustainable forestry. Another criterion is the property’s conversion capability: the facility in Graz is designed in such a way that it can also be used for other purposes, as well as enlarged or downsized module by module. A photovoltaics plant produces a maximum amount of electricity of 460 megawatt hours per year. Enough to meet around half of the energy needs of the entire location.
The logistics center in Graz has been operated by Gebrüder Weiss since 2021. With a 16,500 square meter logistics hall, a handling space of 6,500 square meters and 180 employees, the location is a central hub for transports to South-Eastern Europe.
