Kenson Chan, Sales Manager at Gebrüder Weiss Hong Kong, shares interesting insights into our logistics facility.

Q1: What was it like to open a warehouse in one of the world's most land-constrained cities

In Hong Kong, outsourced third-party warehouses are welcomed by many logistics service providers because they are flexible, easy and low-risk to manage. However, these types of warehouses are a challenge for us to meet customer needs. It depends on how the warehouse is used and the business strategy of the warehouse owner. In addition, our warehouse management system cannot be integrated in most cases.

In order to fully utilize our logistics expertise and be flexible to provide customized logistics solutions, we decided to set up a self-operated warehouse.

Finding the ideal location in Hong Kong is never easy. The options were very limited, partly due to the scarcity of land, but also due to the fact that most warehouses in Hong Kong are converted from factories. The converted warehouses usually have no loading docks and limited storage space due to low ceilings. Modern warehouses in ideal locations are much more competitive. All these factors combined took us 8 months to find our "dream" warehouse.

Q2: What are the special advantages of having this self-operated warehouse in Hong Kong?

Some customers believe that Hong Kong's neighboring locations, such as Shenzhen, offer better warehousing costs. However, this is not always the case, especially for the purpose of consolidation and distribution in Asia. Hong Kong still has the edge regardless of cost or efficiency.

Of course, the bonded warehouses in the neighboring cities can provide all the value-added services at a professional level. However, the complicated customs procedure in China does not make it any cheaper compared to Hong Kong as a free trade port. The advantage of high connectivity of both air and sea freight to/from Hong Kong also perfectly suits the customer's demand for total supply chain lead time.
