Take a tour inside GW Hong Kong Warehouse

Located in the prime area in Shek Mun, Shatin where just 2 minutes away from the metro station, GW HK warehouse has been up and running since April 2019.

Kenson Chan, Sales Manager from GW Hong Kong is going to give us some more detail.

Q1: How is it like to open up a warehouse in probably one of the most land-constrained cities in the world?

In Hong Kong outsourced, third party operated warehouses are welcomed by many logistics service providers because they are flexible, simple and low risk to manage. However this kind of warehouses are challenging for us to fulfill client needs. It depends on how the warehouse is occupied and the warehouse owner’s business strategy. Moreover our warehouse management system is not able to be integrated in most cases.

In order to apply our logistics expertise at full scale and be flexible to offer individualized logistics solutions, we decided to launch a self-operated warehouse.

The search for ideal location is never easy in Hong Kong. Options were very limited partly because of the shortage of land supply but also due to the fact that warehouses in Hong Kong are mostly transformed from factories. The transformed warehouses are usually without loading bays and with restricted storage area from the low ceiling. Modern warehouses in ideal location are considerably competitive. All these factors combined costed us 8 months to finally locate our ‘dream’ warehouse.

Q2: What are the special advantages for having this self-operated warehouse in Hong Kong?

Some clients consider Hong Kong’s neighboring locations such as Shenzhen offer better cost for warehousing. However it is not always the case, especially for the purpose of consolidation and distribution in Asia. Hong Kong is still having the lead no matter from cost or efficiency.

Of course the bonded warehouses in the neighboring cities can fulfill all the value added services at a professional level. Nevertheless the complicated customs procedure in China does not make it anything cheaper compared to Hong Kong as a free trade port. The advantage of high connectivity from both air and sea freight from/to Hong Kong also perfectly suits client’s demand on the total supply chain lead time.
